  • Thousands of terrorists live in the UK*

*According to the UK Government. Police arrest an 89-year-old protester at a demonstration in support of the proscribed organisation 'Palestine Action', in Parliament Square. (Credit: Chris J Ratcliffe/AFP/Getty Images) On the Saturday the 6th of September 890 protesters were arrested in parliament square in London outside the Houses of Parliament. The Metropolitan Police stated the majority of arrests were made due to the protestors support of the proscribed terrorists organisation ‘Palestine Action’ which was proscribed earlier this year after the group allegedly damaged two military aircraft. This is not the first time where protestors were arrested for supporting the organisation with over 500 arrested in August at a similar protest at parliament square as well as others being arrested at pro-Palestinian rallies and protests across the UK. Many of the people arrested were holding signs with the text "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action" whilst sat in silence in rows across parliament square. Because of the proscription of Palestine Action these individuals are being viewed as the same as planners of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing attack or the more recent 2021 Liverpool Women’s Hospital bombing. Protesters seen sitting on parliment square holding placards with the text "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action". (Credit: PA Media via BBC News) The Metropolitan Police and UK government has also come under fire for allegedly prioritising the arrest of individuals who are elderly and/or disabled. Examples of video footage seem to show discussions between police officers about who to arrest next suggesting that the arrests of these ‘terrorists’ are more performative and meant to send a message rather than protecting the public. This is even clearer seen with hundreds of alleged terrorists being able to walk away free after the protest meaning that according to the own government’s laws the Metropolitan Police failed to arrest and detain hundreds of terrorists despite them being easily accessible in one central location. The proscription of ‘Palestine Action’ as a terrorist organisation has potentially caused a rapid increase in terrorism to a point never before seen in the UK. Many protesters were arrested and carried away by Metropolitan Police officers (Credit: EPA via BBC News) It is also to note the context of these arrests and the proscription of ‘Palestine Action’ with the UK government currently supplying UK made weapons and equipment to the Israeli defence forces which are being used in the attacks on Palestinian cities and civilians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank which have recently been described as an “ongoing genocide” by experts in that field. Multiple organisations including the Good Law Project have highlighted the hypocrisy of the UK government by proscribing ‘Palestine Action’ as a terrorist organisation for spray painting two military aircraft whilst simultaneously suppling the Israeli military with weapons that have caused the death of thousands of Palestinian civilians and the destruction of vast areas of civilisation. The proscribed organisation ‘Palestine Action’ are currently taking legal action against the UK government suggesting the proscription is against UK freedom of speech laws. Editors Note: Palestine Action is currently a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK meaning supporting this group could lead to your arrest. The Sparrow and it’s editors in no way support Palestine Action and remind our readers to follow your country’s laws and regulations.

  • The Rising Use of AI in Video Games

Generative AI has provided the gaming industry a rare chance to increase output while keeping costs low, but will the switch to AI hurt the experience? (Credit: Getty Images) Over the past couple of years, AI, specifically generative AI has been a buzzword for every fortune 500 company to throw around. Many companies have promised investors that they will include AI in their products and processes leading to higher returns on investment and a better experience for customers. The gaming industry has not neglected this trend with major players such as Ubisoft, Epic Games, Microsoft and Electronic Arts embracing the "exciting future" that generative AI promised to bring. Some developers hav e expressed caution when using AI. Take Two has said that using AI “presents social and ethical issues that may result in legal and reputational harm and liability" as well as many indie studios and solo developers suggesting that the ability for large AAA developers to use complicated in-house AI models gives them an unfair advantage especially when a large amount of the date used to train these models comes from smaller creators. In 2024, Ubisoft (developer of Assassin's Creed, Just Dance and Far Cry) unveiled their new generative AI prototype promising a revolution in how players interact with non playable characters (NPCs). "Have you ever dreamed of having a real conversation with an NPC in a video game? Not just one gated within a dialogue tree of pre-determined answers, but an actual conversation, conducted through spontaneous action and reaction?" - Ubisoft The prototype version shown is able to dynamically react to the players actions and statements and respond in a way which is natural, human but still in character. Ubisoft say that this system doesn't get rid of the human creative with the AI still requiring details about the character themselves and how they would speak, react and think in different situations. An example of a generated response during a non-game demo of Ubisoft's generative AI prototype (Credit: Ubisoft) Ubisoft say that this development will make their games more dynamic and engaging for players with every action taken or word spoken by the player having a more meaningful impact on the dialogue of NPCs. Whilst Ubisoft have shown off these features in a closed demo to press they have not confirmed when or where they will launch this technology in one of their titles. Ubisoft isn't the only company to utilise advancements in AI in their products with the game engine Unreal Engine (developed by Fortnite developer Epic Games) featuring advanced AI NPCs which can go 'off-script' and change how they respond to the player based on multiple factors. Inworld Origins is a short demo game developed by Inworld AI using Unreal Engine which acted as a public demo of how this technology could be used in a real game. The reviews note how novel and impressive it is to have full conversations with NPCs with many seeing how far they can distract the characters from their original prompt however, there is an overall feeling that generative AI characters seem 'gimmicky' with them being cool and impressive in a barebones tech demo but probably not so needed in a fully released AAA title. Many also note the requirement to have an internet connection when playing as the AI models used cannot be stored locally on the player's console or PC. This not only limits where you can play but also brings up concerns with privacy as user's data, including voice data, is potentially sent to servers in different countries where privacy and user data laws are more relaxed. AI is not just being used in video games however, it is also being used more and more in the development process of video games. Many studios have already adopted AI infused productivity tools such as Monday or Slack to increase efficiency within their development teams however some have gone further with their use of AI. According to a recent poll by a16z, 87% of game studios are using generative AI tools like Midjourney to create in-game environments both to be used as inspiration or mockups as well as within released games. After months of criticism from fans, Activision admitted they used generative AI to create some images in Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 with many noticing because the character in the image had six fingers. Fortnite also ruffled feathers with their inclusion of an AI recreation of the late James Earl Jones' voice for their playable Darth Vader character with actors' union SAG-AFTRA filing a complaint. "We must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games," - Sag-Aftra AI has led to major fears for many in the video game industry with some developers, artists and designers worrying that the growing use of generative AI could make them obsolete. Financial pressures continue to haunt studios with the industry in general experiencing a slump in sales and a dramatic rise in costs. Recent reports place the cost of a AAA game between $200 and $300 million with some games approaching the $1 billion mark. For many of the largest studios the switch from human creatives to AI is nothing but a key financial decision to keep them alive. It is also especially important for companies to appear on the cutting edge of video game development and so diving head first into AI makes sure stock prices are kept stable and a reputation of innovation is upheld. AI will change video games in a significant way in the next decade. From AI NPCs leading to more immersive and unique gameplay to AI generated images slowly creeping into more titles to save costs it is still not clear if AI will make gaming better or worse. However, for many people such as the programmers, artists, designers, voice actors and sound designers, the switch to generative AI could lead to a change in their lives as their careers and passions are replaced with complicated algorithms as major studios try and cut costs.

Now, with their recent shows in Manchester, the excitement is palpable. The five sold-out performances at Heaton Park have captivated the city, creating a cultural impact that is hard to ignore. The Gallagher brothers' homecoming has revitalised Manchester in a way that few events can. Local businesses are the real winners in this scenario. They have embraced the influx of fans, reconnecting them with the Mancunian spirit that Oasis embodies. Pre- and post-gig parties, special offers, and live performances in the vibrant Northern Quarter have transformed the city. The hospitality industry is set to receive a multi-million-pound boost during the Oasis shows. Bars across Manchester have reported their busiest week since before the pandemic. Many are extending their hours and hosting events to meet the demand for live music. ## Merchandising Mania Fans have also been indulging in merchandise from pop-up markets, fan stores, and stands scattered throughout the city. This has provided local businesses with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their unique designs and promote their independent stores. Official and limited-edition collaborations have proven to be particularly popular. For instance, Adidas has reopened its store on Market Street as part of a partnership campaign with the Live ’25 tour. The long queues each day have prompted organisers to advise fans to book shopping slots to avoid lengthy waits. Two fans seen wearing Oasis merch before the opening night at Heaton Park. Generations of fans are filling the streets, reveling in the nostalgia of the 90s. Audiences are craving a taste of the Britpop aesthetic that defined a generation. Younger fans are no longer just idolising the past; they are actively participating in a cultural reawakening. The resurgence of 90s fashion trends and a wave of music discovery are evident. Popular retailers like ASOS and Urban Outfitters have released ‘Britpop’-inspired collections ahead of the shows. Additionally, radio stations have dedicated entire weeks to celebrating Britpop, coinciding with the appearance of three Oasis albums in the UK Top 5. This streaming resurgence has also spotlighted newer acts influenced by the era, such as Inhaler and the Australian band DMAs, who cite Oasis as a significant influence. ## The Broader Impact of Live ’25 The reunion of Oasis has done more than just bring the band back to the forefront of the music scene. It has sparked a broader celebration of Manchester’s enduring identity. The combination of thriving local businesses and the revival of 90s music and style has awakened the city. Live ’25 has proven that Manchester remains a powerhouse of creativity and community. The cultural significance of this event cannot be overstated. It has reignited a passion for music and fashion that resonates with both older and younger generations. The excitement surrounding Oasis' return has created a unique atmosphere in Manchester, one that is filled with nostalgia and new energy. In conclusion, the impact of Oasis' reunion on Manchester is profound. It has revitalised local businesses, celebrated the city's musical heritage, and fostered a sense of community among fans. As the band continues their tour, the legacy of Oasis will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on Manchester and beyond. The phrase "Oasis Live '25" encapsulates the spirit of this momentous occasion, highlighting the connection between the band and their hometown. The reunion is not just a concert; it is a cultural phenomenon that has brought Manchester back into the spotlight, reminding everyone of its rich musical history and vibrant community spirit.

  • 'Your Party' - A New Left Wing Powerhouse?

Jeremy Corbyn's and Zarah Sultana's new political party is gaining traction gaining over 600,000 signups within days of launching. (Credit: Jeremy Corbyn via X) On the 24th of July 2025, sitting independent MPs Corbyn and Sultanna announced their new political party, 'Your Party' with the aim to challenge the Labour party and provide a more left wing, socialist party. The announcment was met with much excitement and interest from the public with many feeling this part represents the antithesis to the far right Reform UK headed by Nigel Farage. Your Party's bold red type face and directional langauge seems to provide a neat package to convey their key messages. The statment on their website reads: "It’s time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade unions and social movements. One that builds power in all regions and nations. One that belongs to you." Promises are made to keep the NHS public, implementing new tax policy, nationalising rail, water and power as well as investing into providing more affordible housing. Your Party also promises to recognise the state of Palestine, calling out the ongoing genocide of Palestinians and protecting the right to protest. The statement also calls out much of Reforms UK rhetoric stating: "The great dividers want you to think that the problems in our society are caused by migrants or refugees. They’re not. They are caused by an economic system that protects the interests of corporations and billionaires." The issue of illegal migration and refugees has been contentious in recent political discourse with many on the right, including the Conservatives and Reform UK, blaming the inefficiency of the NHS, housing crisis and crime on illegal imigrants. Your Party seems to call out this trend instead attributing the issues to governmental pandering to corporations and political donors. With 600,000 signups, Your Party has surpassed Reform UK's membership count and is one of the fastest growing political parties in the UK. The growth in the party is unprecedented with co-leader Zarah Sultana stating that 'Your Party' isn't even the final name of the party with this decision being left up to members. Perhaps the growth of Your Party may be due to a growing divide between Labour and their voter base with many now finding the modern Labour party and current goverment to be less liberal and left in their policies and actions. Left wing critics of the party claim that the modern Labour party is "pandering" to right wing voters seen with the party retracting protections for transgender individuals as well as attempting to restrict protests across the country. It is no doubt that the launch of Your Party has started a stir in Westminster. Zack Polanski, a potential leader of the Green Party, has stated that he would be open to work with Corbyn and Sultana's new party potentially meaning they could create a coalition at the next general election. However, there are fears that this new political party could fragment votes on the left leading to Reform taking a lead in the next general election. • The BRIT Awards move up north

The UK's "Biggest Night in Music" Moves to Manchester for the Next Two Years (Credit: BRIT Awards) A New Era for The BRIT Awards The UK's "biggest night in music" is now officially hosted in Manchester for at least two years. This change is led by Sony Music UK and marks a historic move. For the first time, the BRIT Awards will not be held in London. Instead, it will take place in Manchester's brand new Co-Op Live music venue. This exciting venue joins the ranks of previous locations such as the Royal Albert Hall, Alexandra Palace, Earls Court, and the O2 Arena. The Excitement Surrounding the Move Jason Iley, the CEO and Chairman of Sony Music UK, shared his enthusiasm about the transition. He described this as a “very exciting time for The BRIT Awards.” He emphasized that moving to Manchester, home to some of the most iconic artists in history, will inject new life into the show. Iley believes this move will enhance the legacy of the BRITs by honoring and promoting incredible music. This shift is not an isolated decision. It reflects a larger trend of creative industries relocating to the North of England. Initiatives such as the development of Media City UK in Salford and Channel 4 establishing its second headquarters in Leeds illustrate this evolution. The decentralization of media and creative sectors from London is in full swing. Celebrating Greater Manchester's Rich Music Heritage Greater Manchester boasts an unparalleled music heritage that is celebrated worldwide. Mayor Andy Burnham reiterated this point, stating, “Greater Manchester has an unparalleled music heritage known around the world.” He reminded us that the city will host some of the biggest gigs this summer. This milestone is only possible due to strong investments in new talent and platforms for emerging artists. Many believe this move shows that the BRIT Awards are finally recognizing the significant musical contributions of Manchester and other Northern artists. The city has produced multiple BRIT Award winners and nominees, including Harry Styles, Joy Division, Oasis, The 1975, and Take That. Furthermore, Manchester is home to many esteemed music schools and universities, reinforcing its status as a creative hub. Anticipation Builds for The BRIT Awards The buzz around the BRIT Awards and the Co-Op Live venue continues to grow. While tickets have not been released yet, the show is set for February 28, 2026. It will be streamed live on ITV1, ITV X, STV, and STV Player for free. Fans are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds and what surprises await. For many, the phrase "celebrating and reinvesting in world-class music" encapsulates what the BRIT Awards aim to achieve. This focus on creativity and talent is essential for the future of the music industry, especially in regions outside of London. The Future of The BRIT Awards In conclusion, the transition of The BRIT Awards to Manchester marks a pivotal moment in the celebration of British music. It highlights the vibrant culture found in cities beyond the capital. With strong support for local talent and a commitment to innovation, the BRITs are poised to thrive in their new environment. As we count down the days to this exciting event, industry professionals and fans alike are eager to witness a significant celebration of British music heritage. This new chapter promises to be a milestone, showcasing both emerging and established talent in a city celebrated for its musical history. The Co-Op Live venue stands as a symbol of this shift towards a more inclusive and diverse music scene. It will provide a platform for artists to shine and for audiences to experience their artistry. With Manchester at the forefront of this change, the future of The BRIT Awards looks brighter than ever.

  • Lionesses fight back to reach Euro 2025 semis

England’s women make triumphant comeback in a tense penalty shootout to beat Sweden to a spot in the semi-finals. (Credit: Getty Images)   What turned out to be a dramatic evening ending with England celebrations had a disappointing start, after Swedish captain Kosovare Asllani punished a sloppy England defence to put the side ahead after just two minutes. By half-time England trailed by two goals and were struggling to create, but substitutes Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang made the difference late on. Kelly’s cross was headed in by Lucy Bronze with just 11 minutes to go, and moments later rising star Agyemang equalised to send the game to extra time and ultimately a penalty shootout. The penalties were always going to be a stressful experience, but the distinct lack of quality gave the stadium a nervy atmosphere, with 3 players missing the target completely and six shots kept out by the two goalkeepers. Alessia Russo’s powerful shot made a good start for England, and a save from Hampton gave them the advantage. However, Lauren James and Beth Mead both found their attempts saved by Swedish keeper Jennifer Falk. This allowed Magdalena Eriksson the chance to put Sweden in front, but her shot hit the post. The fourth of England’s penalties was also saved as Falk kept out Alex Greenwood’s strike. England needed to score after Nathalie Bjorn gave Sweden the edge, and the responsibility stood with Chloe Kelly, who kept England’s hopes alive with a shot that fired past Falk. Three misses were to follow as goalkeeper Falk sent the ball over the crossbar, England’s Grace Clinton rolled her shot into Falk’s hands and Hampton made another save. This left Lucy Bronze to deliver the perfect penalty straight down the middle, placing pressure on 18-year-old Smilla Holmberg to give Sweden another chance at victory. She missed the target, and her strike cleared the bar, sending the Lionesses through. England’s defence of their European title continues Tuesday 22 nd July at 8pm, facing Andrea Soncin’s Italy side for a place in the final.

  • Forgotten voices: The female writers who shaped the modernist movement

Modernism was an era that provided the late 19th and early 20th centuries with a cultural shift that introduced brand-new forms of literature, visual art, and performing arts to an already rapidly changing society. Virginia Woolf seen writing (Credit: The Charleston Trust) The innovative style was centred around beliefs which rejected traditions and conventions of the time, instead emphasising subjective experiences and experimentation with forms of art. The importance of the movement and its works can still be upheld today, as it has transformed cultural norms and shaped technique, design, and theory globally. Leaving behind a legacy that redefined art and literature, modernism is studied and celebrated for its radical challenge to the rigid constraints faced by its innovators and its encouragement of expression and experimentation. Women assumed a crucial role in shaping the modernist movement by challenging social norms and exploring themes of identity through creative means. Notably, many of the female figures who influenced the era defied gender expectations and patriarchal traditions not only in their work but also in their own lives. However, these influential women often go unrecognised as the driving force of modernism due to the systems of the time. The prioritisation of male works left female writers’ work overshadowed and dismissed, despite its equal impact and importance.   Virginia Woolf Virginia Woolf was an English writer whose experimental writing style is often regarded as revolutionary in the modernist movement. She popularised new styles of fiction writing characterised by innovative forms and techniques, including ‘stream of consciousness’ writing. Her most popular fiction works including Mrs Dalloway’ and ‘To the Lighthouse’ reject the familiar conventions of Victorian literature by experimenting with themes of time and structure in the novels, allowing readers to experience narrative in unprecedented ways. Woolf was a key figure in the circulation of modernist ideas through her work and her collaboration with other intellectuals. Her publishing house ‘Hogarth Press’, which she founded with her husband, distributed key modernist texts and radical ideas that were central to the promotion of British modernism. Woolf was also a key member of the Bloomsbury Group, who were an influential circle of English writers and artists who embraced and shaped modernist ideas and culture in Britain. Furthermore, Woolf established herself as a feminist thinker in non-fiction works and essays such as ‘A Room of One’s Own’ (1929). Woolf used the essay to empower female writers and address their exclusion, insisting that their perspectives and stories were valid. The essay was vital in forcing societal change in attitudes towards women’s literature and prompted the development and revaluation of feminist literary theory.   Gertrude Stein A celebrated figure of modernism, Stein made waves in the movement by adopting an innovative writing style, much like Woolf. Her work helped to define the aesthetic of the era through her use of experimental narrative structures, language and perception. Her prose was far from straightforward, and this had a great influence on later experimental writing, as she explored new artistic possibilities with a focus on language. Stein was also an advocate for Cubist art and, having recognised its revolutionary styles and representations, she became a mentor for some of the artists and their works. In her salon, Stein hosted modernist artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Matisse, and the space became a crucial meeting place for shaping the visual arts in modernist terms.  This led some to consider her a patron who established the cultural landscape of the time. Gertrude Stein writing (Credit: Hulton Archive/Getty Images ) Beyond her literary innovations and support of the visual arts, Stein also played a pivotal role in attracting major literary figures to her salon and fostering a community. Stein’s mentorship and insight helped shape the development of writers such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald while using her work to challenge conventional ideas about gender and identity. Stein pushed boundaries socially and artistically, as an openly lesbian writer subtly exploring themes of queer identity and domestic partnership. Together, her life and work form a significant force in the evolution of modernism.   H.D . Hilda Doolittle, more famously known by her pen name H.D., had an impact on modernism through her experimental work, which significantly pushed the boundaries of poetry and its form. As one of the earliest imagist poets, she was instrumental in helping to reshape modern poetry away from the ornate and verbose Victorian style by valuing restraint and minimalism. Often overshadowed by her male contemporaries, H.D. was a key figure in redefining 20th-century poetry through her contributions to the themes and aesthetics of modernism. By championing clarity and precision, her early imagist poems reflected the movement’s core ideals; however, her work increasingly evolved beyond the movement’s initial boundaries. Her long poems, such as ‘Trilogy’ and ‘Helen in Egypt’, took on more complex themes such as female identity and sexuality, psychoanalysis and inner consciousness. As a bisexual woman living in an era of rigid gender expectations, H.D.’s exploration of themes that were often marginalised in mainstream modernism, such as female desire, autonomy and resistance, offered a powerful reclamation of women’s voices from literary traditions. (Credit: Pictorial Press Ltd / Alamy Stock Photo) Although during her lifetime she was known almost exclusively for her early imagist poems, her later poems and prose works have become increasingly recognised by feminist critics as a central figure in the history of modernist literature, and she has served as a model for several recent female poets. Her later recognition has cemented her position as a major modernist writer and an enduring influence on new generations of writers.   In revisiting the contributions of Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, and H.D., we gain a fuller understanding of modernism and acknowledge the crucial role women played in redefining literature, art, and identity. Their innovations not only challenged the conventions of their time but also paved the way for future generations of writers. Through highlighting their works, we ensure that the legacy of modernism reflects the diverse voices that truly shaped it.

  • Apple's WWDC Keynote: Upcoming Changes To Your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and More...

Apple kicked off their week-long Worldwide Developers Conference (known as WWDC) with announcements on the future of all their products including iPhone and iPad. (Credits: Apple) WWDC is Apple's chance to show off their new operating systems and software to the general public before their release in September. More importantly however, it provides developers insider knowledge and early access to new features that they can implement into their apps. Previous WWDCs have seen the announcement of Apple Intelligence (Apple's new product-wide AI features) Apple Vision Pro and even the launch of iCloud. While we are only covering the main one and half hour keynote which kicks off WWDC, the event spans a week which will be full of smaller announcements meant more for developers than the general public. However, we will update this article if any noteworthy news is announced. Skip To.. A Brief History of WWDC Improvements to Apple Intelligence 'Liquid Glass': A new Design Language IOS: Changes to iPhone iPad OS: changes to iPad Mac OS Tahoe: Changes to Mac Watch OS: Changes to Apple Watch Vision OS: changes to Vision Pro Other Updates Conclusion A Brief History of WWDC WWDCs first started in 1983 and was a space for Apple to reach developers and talk about the more technical side of their products. In 1984 Steve Jobs announced the Macintosh at that year's keynote starting a long standing tradition of announcing new products at the event. Over the past four decades the keynote has expanded with more developers attending in person as well as more people viewing online. Apple has also invited more media to the event utilising it as a marketing opportunity to increase attention for their new product releases in September and October. Operating systems are a key focus of the event. An operating system (or OS) is a piece of core software installed on a device which makes it run. Apple releases updates to all of their operating systems yearly, usually in the autumn which makes WWDC the perfect time to showcase new features and allow developers to update their apps. Improvements to Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence first launched last year to lukewarm success with critics questioning half baked implementations of AI features and debating how useful (or useless) they are. However, this year Apple seems to have improved their offering with important improvements in Apple Intelligence across all their products and the launch of more useful features that the every day person would find beneficial. They first announced that Apple Intelligence will be supported by more languages such as Dutch, Traditional Chinese and Turkish as well allowing developers of apps on iPhone, iPad and Mac access to Apple Intelligence to integrate into their apps. An example of this they provided was Kahoot being able to create a test based on photo of your handwritten notes. Along with this Apple also emphasised their focus on privacy by stating that many features of Apple Intelligence happen on device meaning that no data leaves your phone and if it does it is encrypted and safe. The phone app has had updates utilising AI and machine processing with new call screening where calls from unknown numbers are first answered by an AI voice who will only notify you of the call if it is a genuine caller which Apple suggests will cut out scam calls interrupting you. Hold assist was also announced meaning you 'hold your space in line' whist using your phone in other ways or leaving it on the side. Translate has also been improved and implemented more broadly across all communication apps with live translations available on FaceTime and on calls as well as automatic translation in iMessage. This translation also extends to Apple Music which now has an option to translate the lyrics of songs into your language and also tells you how to pronounce lyrics. (Credit: Apple) 'Liquid Glass': A new Design Language Apple have announced their new 'Liquid Glass' design language which they have launched across all of their products. The new design features softer, glossy and glass like materials utilising lighting and 3D effects much more than previous designs. All elements have been changed to feature softer and more rounded corners to match the shape of devices as well as adjustments to animations to make the UI feel more responsive and natural. Apple have also announced that all OS versions will be named after the year, marking a change to their previous naming convention. This means the new round of updates will be IOS 26, MacOS 26, WatchOS 26, etc. The new home screen design with clear 'Liquid Glass' options for app icons (Credit: Apple) IOS: Changes to iPhone Starting off, wallpapers are now more dynamic with time now automactially shifting based on the photo you use as a background. Notifications now also cause your wallpaper to move to ensure the key parts of the photo stay in frame. The photos and camera app have also been re designed to make it easier and faster to take photos and search for them. A new 'Spatial Scenes' feature has also been included in the photos app where you can turn any 2D photo into a spatial photo which changes depending your viewing angle and feels more 3D. Messages have also had improvments with backgrounds now available in iMessage as well as polls and typing indicators in groupchats. Genmoji, Apple's emoji creation tool, has also been improved with the ability to mix two or more emojis together. iMessage now supports backgrounds for all conversations (Credit:Apple) The wallet app has new intergrations to make tracking orders easier with it automatically using your emails to bring information about deliveries into one place. Apple have also updated their visual intelligence feature to work on your devices screen meaning you can take a screenshot then use AI to search within that screenshot. This is a similar feature to Google Lens which allows you to search using images. A demonstration of the new visual intelligence feature (Credit: Apple) iPad OS: changes to iPad Along with the new design language and changes affecting iOS, iPad OS also includes a redesigned file app making it easier to find and sort files. With this new multitasking features have also been implemented making it possible to have multiple windows from different apps on your screen at once. For creatives, new audio settings make it possible to use native voice isolation and background sound reduction technology to record audio with iPad as well as the ability to export large items in the background and still use your iPad in the meantime. Mac OS Tahoe: Changes to Mac The new Mac OS is named after Tahoe, an area in Northern California known for it's beauty. The new version of the OS introduces new controls in control centre, new widgets for the home screen and better shortcuts which can be customised and enabled to run in the background. One of the bigger features is the improved Spotlight which now is able to search for content on your Mac faster and more easily with context aware search results as well as the ability to set up quick keys to quickly perform actions. Vision OS: changes to Vision Pro The Apple Vision Pro has lived in a weird state since it's launch as it never appealed fully to professionals due to its unqiue and hard to share headset design nor to the general consumer with its high price point. However, this update to Vision OS seems to try and increase the usefulness of Vision Pro and make it easier for businesses to use it. Firstly, widgets are now available in Vision OS and can be anchored to elements within your physical space, such as walls, tables and windows, and will stay there until you move them. This means you can create a fully virtual office with a clock on your wall and a calendar on your desk and return to it every time you use Vision Pro. Alongside this if you and your friend both have your own Vision Pro you can now play games or watch movies together in the same virtual environment. (Credit: Apple) Vision Pro also supports new accessories with the Logitech Muse and PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers which allow you to draw and interact in new ways. Gaming on iPhone, iPad and Mac has also had a boost with a dedicated games app where you can see the latest updates for all downloaded games and also compete in challenges with friends. Conclusion This years WWDC has seen the introduction of a brand new design lanaguge for Apple software across all their devices. Apple has also seemed to allow users to customise their devices more with the introduction of backgrounds in messages, new wallpaper settings, personalised workout buddies and more context aware functions in maps, mail, wallet and safari. Throughout the keynote Apple re-emphasised their commitment to protect their users privacy which is a refreshing change from recent announcements from Google and Meta which seem to suggest the opposite. • Tesla Sees Drop In Sales Due To Elon Musk And His Political Ties

The Impact of Elon's Politics on Tesla's Sales in Europe Declining Sales and Political Shadows Tesla, a globally recognized car manufacturer, faces a sharp decline in sales in Europe. The company has reportedly seen a staggering 45% decrease in sales within this region. Many speculate that this downturn is linked to Elon Musk's controversial political activities, including his close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump. As Tesla struggles, international buyers are turning their attention to alternative electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. Chinese firm BYD has recently surpassed Tesla in sales. Traditional car giants such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Renault are witnessing a rise in interest as European customers appear to drift away from the American EV maker. The Role of Social Media in Public Perception Social media has played a significant role in shaping the current perception of Tesla. Numerous accounts criticize Elon Musk and his political affiliations, contributing to the sales decline. For instance, the TikTok account Overthrow Musk takes a unique approach to protest. They create billboards and cardboard cutouts aimed at discouraging consumers from purchasing Teslas and other products associated with Musk, such as 'X'. Public Sentiment and Growing Opposition Other accounts like People Vs Elon have gained popularity, amassing over 61,500 followers. This indicates a growing trend of opposition against Elon Musk and his products. The emergence of this negative sentiment around Tesla may have resulted in a new social stigma surrounding the brand. Many Tesla owners now display bumper stickers on their vehicles stating they purchased them before Musk's political entanglements. "I bought this before Elon went crazy" bumper sticker that can be bought on online retailers such as Amazon. This social pressure has led to a dramatic 70% increase in the number of second-hand Teslas available on the market compared to last year. Owners appear eager to offload their vehicles, driven by this new social climate. Recent Survey Highlights Concerns Moreover, a survey conducted by online news portal T-Online revealed alarming statistics for Tesla. Out of 100,000 Germans surveyed, an overwhelming 94% indicated they would not buy a Tesla. This is particularly troubling for the manufacturer, as they have recently opened a substantial 740-acre 'giga-factory' in the country to enhance production capacity. In Norway, a market that has historically been a stronghold for Tesla due to generous EV incentives, the brand's market share has diminished significantly. It plummeted from 21.7% in January 2024 to a mere 7.4% a year later, while competitors like Toyota expand their market presence. Changing Consumer Behavior The data indicate a clear shift in consumer behavior. Wealthy individuals, who typically have the means to purchase a Tesla, are choosing to spend their money elsewhere. This trend suggests a broader desire among European consumers to distance themselves from Elon's controversial political affiliations. Historically, European consumers have leaned towards more progressive and socially conscious values, making Musk's relationship with the controversial Trump administration all the more problematic. New Opportunities for Competitors As Tesla's appeal wanes, alternative brands such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Toyota are attracting more buyers. Furthermore, new entrants from China like BYD and Omoda are quickly ramping up their sales in the UK and Europe. They are well-positioned to capture the growing market share in the EU, where pressure to reduce carbon emissions is intensifying. The Future of Tesla Amidst Political Turbulence Overall, the outlook for Tesla remains uncertain. As the company navigates this decline in sales, the repercussions of Elon Musk's political stance become increasingly apparent. It remains to be seen how much longer Tesla's stockholders will tolerate this situation before advocating for leadership changes. In the coming year, we could witness a significant drop in Tesla's market share and overall popularity. Alternatively, if the situation does not improve, there might be pressures to distance Elon Musk from the company entirely in an effort to salvage the brand. As the situation develops, the future trajectory of Tesla hangs in the balance. We'll have to wait and see how this unfolds.

  • The Otley Run Attack And The Rise Of Violent Misogyny

A month on from the life-threatening attack on the famous Otley Run pub crawl, we look at the suspect’s motivations and how the rise of misogyny might have been a cause. The police cordoned off roads after the attack (Credit: YappApp) Just over a month ago, on Saturday 26th April, police were called to Otley Road in the Headingley area of Leeds after they received reports of a male suspect brandishing weapons. As usual, the popular student area was buzzing with excited pub-goers who were equipped with their best fancy dress to take on the 19 pubs on the renowned ‘Otley Run’. Two women were admitted to hospital to be treated for their injuries, as was the suspect, 38-year-old Owen Lawrence, who was arrested at the scene and later died due to his self-inflicted injuries. As the roads surrounding the area were locked down and the traffic stopped, news of the attack spread, and social media posts written by the suspect himself began to circulate. The Facebook post, written by Lawrence before the attack took place, detailed his plans for his so-called “Otley Run Massacre”, including images of weapons such as the crossbow and firearm found at the scene. Citing his motivations as “revenge”, “terrorism”, and “misogynistic rage”, Lawrence appeared to display his hatred for women and girls openly on social media, with Facebook posts earlier in the year stating that he hates “gender equality”, and “feminists of all four waves”. Lawrence also referred to his exploration of “far right ideas” including the work of Brenton Tarrant, who after releasing his manifesto ‘The Great Replacement’ online in 2019 killed 51 people in and around two mosques at Christchurch in New Zealand. This use of social media to attract attention to their beliefs and intentions appears to be of great value to the perpetrators, allowing them to align themselves with far right and extremist ideologies. This has raised further concerns for affected communities about the increasingly prevalent hate and violence against women online, and its impacts on real-world politics and cultural beliefs. With social media content being a significant opinion leader in the lives of many, its influence has never been so evident in recent years, as communities promoting resentment towards women, feminism, and gender equality have been popularised and have threatened women’s safety both online and offline. One of the most recognisable influencers of these online communities is self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate, who has in recent years received widely publicised accusations of rape, human trafficking, and sexual aggression, to name but a few. This has not denied Tate social media success, with a following on ‘X’ that amasses to 10.7 million and several viral clips in which he speaks in derogatory ways about women. According to research conducted by King’s College London, younger age groups are more likely to have a positive opinion of Tate, in particular, 1 in 5 young men who have heard of Tate and say that they have a positive view of him. Andrew Tate being interviewed by media. (Credit: Reuters) It is no surprise that young people appear to be the most influenced by the surge of misogynistic content and hate towards women online, as content is presented as entertainment on social media platforms that utilise short-form content to engage users. Social media creators thus hold a powerful position in which they can normalise harmful content for young people, fuelling misogynistic ideologies and leading young people to idolise them until they become a popular part of mainstream culture. Interesting research by UCL and the University of Kent found that in their inspection of TikTok algorithms, after just 5 days of usage on the app there was a fourfold increase in the level of misogynistic content presented on the ‘For You’ page which recommends content to individual accounts. With the algorithm privileging more extreme material and the obsessive use of social media platforms by young people, users are quickly exposed to more extreme sexist views which perpetuate ideas about hate and violence against women. Therefore, much responsibility can be placed on the platforms themselves, as casual engagement with the extremist content that is so commonly served to young people can spiral into recruitment for the communities that are fuelling hatred and misogyny online. Evidently, this is not a problem that is simply a matter of opinion, it is affecting the lives of all women and girls in every aspect, and lives should not have had to have been endangered in the recent attack on Otley Road for concerns to be raised. Forcing online platforms to take accountability for hateful content is not the only way in which we can stop violence against women from continuing to be a societal norm. Stronger action should be taken to police online content and educating young people should be at the forefront of our everyday conversations. Challenging these behaviours is surely the most important and effective way to create positive experiences for women and girls online and in their communities.
